Our vision is 'to provide an exceptional, knowledge rich educational experience to ensure all scholars succeed'
Welcome from the Senior Leadership Team
Astrea Academy Sheffield opened in September 2018 as a free school and started with Reception, Year 1 and Year 7 scholars. This year, we opened our sixth form and currently have scholars from Nursery up to Year 12. We are the only all-through academy within Astrea Academy Trust which also comprises of 25 other academies. We were judged to be good in all categories by Ofsted in December 2022 (https://astreasheffield.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Final-PDF.pdf).
As an Astrea Academy, we subscribe fully to the trust’s aim: that every child gets a brilliant education. Our work starts and ends with a universal belief in high standards and expectations for every child, no matter what barriers they face. Underpinning our vision is a commitment that knowledge and scholarship will be celebrated, we want our children to become resilient in the face of challenge and we commit to providing all Astrea children with rich opportunities and to supporting them every step of the way. I am incredibly proud of what the Astrea family has achieved and as the trust matures, we are in a strong position to embark upon this next exciting phase, where all of our energy will be focused on providing a brilliant education which helps children to learn, thrive and lead successful lives.
Astrea’s future success is underpinned by a strong set of shared values. These values are important because they support our vision, shape our culture, and make a statement about what we at Astrea hold dear:
We believe in a culture of high expectations for all so that our scholars can achieve and climb the mountain to university or an aspirational alternative. We have created a strong and well-defined culture, which is clearly articulated, understood, and frequently rewarded. This culture has established social norms through routines and systems, all in the service of learning that is both joyful and rigorous. It is designed to be inclusive and aimed at building a positive, predictable, and safe school environment in which learning can flourish without disruption.
Here at Astrea Academy Sheffield, we are an inclusive academy that is incredibly diverse, comprising of scholars with 52 ethnicities and 51 first languages. We are proud of our academy and the area that it serves; we work with our local community by hosting regular events including coffee mornings, Community Advisory Group and our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.
Our curriculum, like everything at Astrea Academy Sheffield, builds upon our vision: to provide an exceptional, knowledge-rich educational experience, which ensures all scholars succeed. We believe in developing the whole child and as such provide extensive experiences, which are an integral part of our curriculum offer. We know that every Astrea scholar is capable of achieving something wonderful; by providing a rigorous, carefully sequenced, academic curriculum that is full of powerful knowledge, we are enabling scholars to understand and challenge the world around them. Maintaining consistently high expectations of all scholars ensures that they are all entitled to learn the powerful knowledge taught, regardless of starting place. We do not narrow the curriculum for any scholar. Instead, we ensure that all scholars receive their entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum are based on three key principles that underpin everything we do:
- Rich in powerful knowledge.
- High expectations for all.
- Reading, reading and a little bit more reading

Staff at the academy
Our staff are integral to our ability to achieve our vision in ensuring that all scholars succeed. All staff in the academy have high expectations of themselves because we know that we have a moral imperative to do deliver excellence for our community; we are proud that every adult in our team shares that commitment.
We offer all staff excellent, bespoke CPD that is crafted using relevant evidence and up-to-date research. All staff are given weekly opportunities to undertake deliberate practice to strengthen their delivery and teaching staff are given time to undertake intellectual preparation for their lessons. Together, we have created a culture that is open to growth and challenge: we teach with our doors open, visit each other’s lessons often and stimulating conversations about routines, curriculum and pedagogy are the norm. We are mindful of staff’s workload and have built sensible, centralised systems to support effective communication, efficient behaviour management and less late nights/realistic marking expectations.
