The vision of the maths department at Astrea Academy Sheffield is to teach mathematics passionately while developing mutual respect and motivating students; embed accurate mathematical knowledge via a well-rounded curriculum and encourage independent reasoning.

Maths is a key subject for the future of our students, we therefore:

  • Share our passion, enthusiasm and love for the subject.
  • Aim to ensure we teach maths at the top level.
  • Teach with the belief that our subject can and should change lives.

In mathematics we understand that KS3 content is key for the success of our students moving onto GCSE’s. Due to the reduced amount of time pupils have had in schools during the 2019/20 academic year, the following changes have been made to the curriculum for the 2020/21 academic year in maths.

  • Pupils starting Y7 will start by recapping on basic maths skills in order to access KS3 curriculum.
  • Pupils starting Y8 in September will cover Y7 topics below in the first half term, followed by Y8 content.
    • Positive Integers, Negative Integers, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.
  • Pupils starting Y9 will cover the Y8 topics below, followed by the Y9 topics. Students will need to have covered the essential KS3 material before going onto KS4, for this to happen we have condensed some topics to allow the time for this to take place. The condensed topics will then be filtered back into KS4 to ensure no learning has been missed.
      • Angles in Quadrilaterals & Polygons, Perimeter Area of Parallelograms and Volume and Surface Area of Prism and Cylinders.

Home Learning

Students have 2 parts to their home learning.

  1. Hegarty maths – Homework set every week
  2. Kerboodle – Access to the curriculum we follow, including the assessments.

How can you help?

  1. Each week ask about your child’s homework
  2. Provide your child a good place to work
  3. Encourage your child to work in the right way
  4. Sign-off their homework each week
  5. Encourage your child not to give up if they are making mistakes
  6. Reassure your child if they are not understanding
