End of Year Message from the Principal

The 2021 – 2022 school year has now come to a close.  It has been a year of growth and change. Our scholars and staff have endured further disruption due to covid, but they have persevered brilliantly.

All Astrea Academy Sheffield teachers have endeavored to provide the best educational experience possible for our scholars. We have seen the scholars grow academically, with many significantly improving and making up for time lost in the latter half of 2020 and the inconsistencies of the 2020 – 2021 school year.

It is a joint effort between home and school to educate our scholars and I thank you for partnering with us as we work together to make sure our scholars are successful.

We are looking forward to welcoming 35 new staff to the Academy in September. All of who have been recruited due to their talent and dedication of working hard to achieve our vision.

We will be saying goodbye to a small group of staff this summer. Miss Ismail (Mathematics Teacher), Mr Harrop (Head of History), Mr Birch (Head of Art, Design & Technology), Miss Dyer (Geography Teacher), Miss Zaman (DDSL), Mr Hussain (Attendance Officer) and last but by no means least, Miss Power (SENCO), are all moving on to new roles. I am sure you will join me in thanking them for their dedication to AAS in their time here, and to wish them well for the future.

As we look to next academic year, there are exciting times ahead. We will see our founding cohort take their GCSE’s, we are recruiting to our new Sixth Form which will launch in September 2023, and we will for the first time be a ‘full’ secondary school with years 7-11 all in place. We are launching a new policy in September, which focuses on disruption free classrooms – imperative to ensure our scholars achieve their best.

I wish you and your loved ones a safe and enjoyable summer break. We look forward to welcoming you back to Astrea Academy Sheffield in September.

With very best wishes,

Emma Glover

9SHA Charity Art Exhibition

9SHA successfully put together a charity art exhibition on Monday 11th July. The group have been looking at a cubism and photography during art lessons and then applied their knowledge to create work inspired by cubist style artists.

The group produced both independent and collaborative work alongside organising the exhibition. Each scholar had the chance to develop their professionalism, entrepreneurial, communication, and work experience (catering) skills.

The group chose to raise money for Pitsmoor Adventure Playground as this an organisation that they wanted to give back to after having spent a lot of their childhood there. Staff were able to donate or purchase copies of the scholar’s work.

Thank you to staff who made the time to visit the show!

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust (DKHT) On Track to Achieve for Wellbeing programme

Astrea Academy Sheffield has had a successful year regarding the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust (DKHT) On Track to Achieve for Wellbeing programme, funded by Westfield Health. Due to the success of the programme we have gained a place on the course again next year which will help to develop the confidence, emotional resilience, and teamwork of some of our Y8 scholars, enabling them to prepare to understand more about the benefits of an active lifestyle and to understand the role this can have on their mental wellbeing.

Our year 9 female scholars taking part in the programme had their final sessions last week which included a reward day and Westfield Health conference day, both days were an amazing experience for scholars. Scholar involved in the events were able to visit the following venues; EIS where they were able to observe the Paralympic Table Tennis team, Ice Sheffield where they were able to observe a district Ice skating competition and they also enjoyed some reward time at Ninja Warrior and Hollywood bowl.

Over the course of the programme, scholars have worked with our Athlete Mentor, Paul Broadbent, to define and achieve their personal goals and targets, whilst developing teamwork and communication skills by working with other scholars and the local community.

The girls have been outstanding throughout the programme and demonstrated true tenacity and curiosity throughout. We are so proud of all the scholars involved in the programme and looking forward to more success stories next year.

Uniform Expectations

Scholars must be wearing the correct uniform which consists of grey skirts / trousers / black school shoes (no trainers)

A reminder to all our scholars that they must only wear their PE kit on days where they have a practical PE lesson or a sports elective.

Term Time Leave

YOUR SCHOLAR’S ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT.

Polite reminder to all parents / carers that a term time leave form must be completed and submitted to the Academy prior to leave being taken. Exceptional circumstances do not include family holidays or extended leave to visit family. Please be aware that any leave taken which is not authorised by the Academy may result in a fine or prosecution.

For a term time leave form please contact the Academy to speak to the Attendance Team – Mr Hussain or Mr S Boyd.

Revision Materials

To help our scholars with revision we have created a Revision Techniques display which is now up in the library.

This display is full of useful tips and trick to help our scholars make the most of their revision. It is extremely useful for any scholars who are struggling to find a way to revise that works for them or if they just want to try something new!

To go along with this, we have also made up some Revision Baskets for Y10 scholars to use while they are in the library.  These baskets are full of all the materials needed to carry out the techniques on the poster including: Note Cards, Flash Cards, Highlighters, Sticky Notes, Coloured Pens and Blank Timetables

Miss Allen's Book of the Month

Amazing Muslims Who Changed the World by Burhana Islam. A beautifully illustrated book which tells the stories of global icons like Muhammad Ali and Malala Yousafzai, to lesser-known pioneers such as Sultan Razia and Noor Inayat Khan. These short but through accounts of these extraordinary people’s lives, inspire and show how rich and wonderful Muslim history is. I particularly liked the interesting fact that came with each story!

Living with Teenagers

‘Living with Teenagers’ is a free course for Parents & Carers starting Wednesday 21st September at Burngreave Family Centre.
