Our Vision

“To ensure that all staff are equipped with the tools and knowledge to deliver a curriculum which enables all pupils irrespective of their starting point to make accelerated progress. Staff know all learners and their needs exceptionally well and are able to support every child to reach their full potential. School leaders are committed to developing areas of specialism to further enhance the learning of all of our pupils.”

Our department is built on care, compassion and understanding for individuality and the relentless commitment to serving an excellent, holistic practice for every child, every day. Pupil progress is at the heart of our curriculum and our planning, teaching and assessment takes into account the varied abilities and interests of all of our learners. Some of our pupils will start the academy with existing needs which we continue to nurture and support. For those pupils with attainment that falls out of line with expected rates of progress we are continuously developing our identification processes to ensure that pupils are receiving the adequate support that they require and deserve.

Astrea Academy Sheffield is an inclusive school and we support all of our pupils with their various levels of need and their varying degrees of complexity. Every child is treated as an individual case and learning is tailored to suit the pupil’s personal learning and well-being needs.

The Special Educational Needs department works closely with all stake holders that are involved in the support and care of the individual child. Collaborative planning of the curriculum is done with teachers and school leaders to ensure that all learners’ needs are catered for across their education.

The department regularly liaises with external agencies and support services including Speech and Language Services, Educational Psychologists, Primary and Secondary Inclusion services and the Autism team all of which provide the essential support and advice to our pupils and their families. The Multi Agency Support Team (MAST) is also closely linked with both the SEN and Pastoral departments to provide family support outside of school. The department ensures that regular contact with parents is made to strengthen those relationships that are vital for our pupils to succeed.

The department is constantly seeking new ways of supporting the individual needs of our pupils to ensure that they thrive in our learning environment. We provide specialist resources to our learners where necessary and pupils receive continuous in class support as well as small group support or individual intervention where necessary.

The SEN information report, the Access Plan and the Astrea Academy Sheffield Inclusion policy, all of which can be found on the website, specify details on how we provide the additional support for our learners’ needs and disabilities. Astrea Academy Sheffield is a modern building and is fully compliant with the Disability and Discrimination Act.
